Reading The Associate, it is easy to understand why John Grisham is such a powerful and popular author. The book is well written and researched. Kyle MacAvay is top of his class in law at Yale and his future is bright and is wanted by all the big Wall Street firms. He has set his heart on doing three years of public law before heading off to chase the mighty dollar on Wall Street. Unfortunately for Kyle he has a dark secret hidden in his past something that was hidden and would remain there. But there are a group of people who happen to have pictorial evidence of what Kyle is trying to forget, and they are not afraid to use it against him. They force him to give up his dream and send him to Wall Street to be their spy. Kyle has no enthusiasm even though he is the brightest graduate entering a legal career that year. He is shocked at the work and the expected hours and that he is nothing more than an overpaid grunt. His spymasters begin to guide him and they clearly know far more than he does about the firm. Unusually for an American lawyer Kyle has a conscience and does the honest thing and gets himself a criminal lawyer with friends. They are going to help him while protecting him at the same time. The ending comes as a surprise. A great read.

'unputdownable'. It is a great read which has you on the edge of your seat. Similar to The Firm. Classic Grisham

“Not his best”

I would have to agree with the comments of the other reviewers, it is well plotted with a good sense of mounting tension, however, the ending lacks that 'punch' one has come to expect, nay, anticipate with bated breath, from Grisham. A disappointing read. I doubt that it will prevent me from reading his next offerings though!
