Reviews: The Dead Ex (15)
“So good”
(Paperback)
by Kerry Henderson
Vicki is working hard as an aromatherapist when the police arrive to say her ex husband is missing. They think she knows more than she's saying but her memory isn't the most reliable. Meanwhile Scarlet and her mother are just trying to survive but in an illegal way that lands them both in some bad situations. What connects the two stories and where is the ex? This was really good. I am a fan of the author and have read other works so knew this would be good. It did not disappoint. The plot is quite twisty and there's lots going on. Its told mostly by Vicki but we do hear from Scarlet throughout as well. The plot is clever as it slowly brings everyone together. Its a quick read and I found myself struggling to put it down. Vicki takes a while to warm up to and she has some issues but you find an understanding as the plot develops. The ending was so good and really brought it all together. A great psychological thriller.
“Good Psychological Thriller”
(Paperback)
by Milton of Campsie Annie
Vicki's ex husband David has gone missing. The police think Vicki has harmed / murdered David, but she suffers from memory lapses due to epilepsy following an attack at work and cannot remember much. The chapters alternate between Vicki and Scarlet and then also Helen, who tell their stories, but how are these three storylines connected ? This is a real page turner that will keep you guessing to the very end. there are many twists and many turns which will hold your attention and keep you reading. Another great psychological thriller from Jane Corry.
“An enjoyable read.”
(Paperback)
by Maggie Macdonald
Vicki's life changed dramatically when she began to suffer from epilepsy. Her husband who was supposed to love her has left her fro his PA. She had to change careers to do something where she can be self employed and work when she is able. Scarlet loves her mother. She is a good girl who does as her mother says and plays the strange games her mother devises. Her life changes when her mother is imprisoned for drug offences. When Vicki's ex- husband disappears she finds herself caught up in a nightmare. Her epilepsy leaves her with holes in her memory- has she done something dreadful? At times I found this quite confusing as the story is told in different time frames and at times it is difficult to work out what was going on. However Jane Corry manages to weave the story together leaving the reader muttering-"I didn't see that coming!" This was an enjoyable read.
“Compelling Psychological Thriller”
(Paperback)
by Jane Hunt
A suspenseful psychological thriller, whose complicated plot and characters keep you enthralled and guessing right to the end. Told from multi-points of view the story demands concentration, but it's worth the effort. Vicki lives on a precipice, her past continually haunts her, and her health makes normal life difficult. The reasons for her emotional damage become clear as the story progressed and coupled with her life-altering condition, make her an unreliable protagonist. Is she telling the truth? Does she know what happened? Does she have an agenda the reader is unaware? Scarlett is a tragic character, the catalogue of misfortunes that she suffers are heartrending and delivered with authenticity and sensitivity underpinned by careful and detailed research. Scarlett's relationship with her mother is key to her plight. Helen is a catalyst for the book's final chapters, she is streetwise and driven, but her motives are not immediately apparent. The plot has numerous twists; it's like sailing on a ship in a rough sea, just when you think you know what's happening, another piece of information is dropped in, and you lose your way. What makes this a compelling psychological thriller is that the female protagonists are ordinary, strong women who are faced with terrible choices and outcomes. They are easy to empathise, and you want them to find peace of mind and happiness. I received a copy of this book from Penguin UK, Viking via NetGalley in return for an honest review.
“3 Stars”
(Paperback)
by Dana Farren
When I started this book I struggled at first to see the connection between Vicki and Scarlet as the tale alternated between the two. I was horrified for Scarlet and all she went through and hated her selfish mother but could not empathise with Vicki. Then suddenly about 40% into the book it became far more compelling and I definitely wanted to know what was happening and who did what. The end of the book was rather rushed and rounded off too neatly. A good read but not the best, sorry! Many thanks to Netgalley for a digital copy of this title. All opinions expressed are my own.
