Reviews: The Devils (43)
“Fabulous fantasy!”
(Paperback)
This is the first Joe Abercrombie book I have read and I definitely think I will be reading more. Its a real rollercoaster of a ride with a rag tag bunch of devils including a werewolf, a necromancer, n elf ,a vampire ,a soldier who can't die and a monkey. If that doesn't make you want to read it nothing will. These characters are bound by the pope, ( who is a 10 year old girl btw) to put Alex , a Thief on the Empresses throne in Troy. It is filled with humour and you just can't help loving this motley crew. Its a non stop ride from start to finish and I'm thoroughly looking forward to the next one in the series.
“Bone crunching insanity!”
(Hardback)
A vampire, a werewolf, an elf, a necromancer, a priest, a cursed Crusader and a well connected woman carrying more knives that you can count stumble into a shambolic adventure…. I’m honestly not sure what more you could possibly want from the master of grimdark.
I punched that 5 stars button so hard I thought my thumb would smash through my phone screen. Laden with foul language, bone crunching violence, unbreakable bonds (not for a lack of trying) and savage sarcasm, Abercrombie’s take on a demonic Suicide Squad hits the mark perfectly as the unlikely companions battle across Europe to try a get a ferrety street rat onto a throne that she isn’t so sure she wants in the first place. ‘The Devils’ is funny, tragic, sad and everything in between. And my god, I didn’t quite realise how much I would adore a huge, tattooed Nordic werewolf, but here we are, Vigga is EXCEPTIONAL.
My favourite read of 2025 so far, and looking likely as the best of the year for me.
“Abercrombie at his most cinematic”
(Paperback)
Absolutely wild ride from start to finish. Was it kind of predictable? Yes. Are the themes as deep as a puddle? Also yes. Did I enjoy every single second? 100% yes. This is a little less dark than Abercrombie’s usual writing but it’s still messy, the characters are still all terrible people and the world is stacked with the worst circumstances you can think of. It’s rude, crude and violent, which is exactly what I came for.
Justice for Vigga, she did it all but I love her anyway.
“Brilliant”
(Paperback)
I have never read any of Abercrombie’s work before but if it’s all like this I’m here for it.From the very first page I was hooked. The characters were engaging and funny. The battle scenes visceral and bloody. I cant wait to see what the Devils get up to next!
“Fantasy Suicide Squad”
(Paperback)
This is a gritty and witty Medieval Europe fantasy written expertly by Joe Abercrombie, with characters so unique you’ll know whose perspective you’re reading from their first sentence. Each of the main cast has their own stories to tell, leaving everyone who reads the book with their own favourite: a priest, a vampire, a werewolf, a knight who can't die or a necromancer. Following a quest to put a thief on the throne of Troy, it’s a perfect place to try Abercrombie’s style of books.
