“Val McDermid & Karen Pirie”
(Paperback)
by Anne Loach
Have read and enjoyed all the Tony Hill books but have only recently discovered the Karen Pirie series - very annoyed with myself for not discovering these books earlier. Very hard to put down and by getting all 4 in the series meant I could read them in order and wallow in the characters - as ever superbly drawn by the author. Waiting for the next one will not be easy!!!

“A Fantastic Thriller”
(Paperback)

Before I read the book I had seen the television adaptation of this book, not that it made any difference, as I could not remember most of it. One thing I can say is that the book is far more memorable than the TV adaptation. Four drunken students are staggering back through the December snow attempting to get back to their beds. They take a short cut through the pictish cemetery when they stumble across the body of a dead woman. They know the woman, she is Rosie the barmaid in a pub they often used. They were the only suspects that the police had and spent the next twenty-five years free but always under suspicion. Twenty-five years later Fife Police announce they are undertaking a cold cases review, using the new DNA techniques. The four friends hope that they will finally be cleared of any involvement in the crime. When two of these friends are murdered the remaining two realise, they cannot pin their hopes on the police. Especially as the police had lost crucial evidence, including those items which contained DNA evidence. While all four had always maintained their innocence it was clear someone was not as innocent as they were. The remaining pair, Alex and Weird just hope they could live long enough to be proven innocent. They have no idea who or what they are up against. This is an excellent thriller a fantastic read.
