Reviews: The First World War in 100 Objects (5)
“History with a difference.”

by Pamela Koehne Drube at Cardiff
While there are many of these curated books around, very few of them have the benifit of not being tied to the collections of a particular institution. This book tells the story of the First World War in a collection of objects, many of which are instantly recognisable, and some of which are slightly more obscure. I recommend this to anyone who is interested in history, both social and military, or who just enjoys a fascinating collection of objects with some great stories attached.

A perfect book, full of intriguing snippets of WWI information. Bringing the more obscure items to the reader's attention and so creating another dimension of understanding of this terrible conflict.
“fascinating”

This is a beautifully produced book, full of amazing objects that give the reader a real connection to the events of 100 years ago. Each object gives a unique insight into the war through what is left behind - the debris, the medals, gasmasks, the uniforms, personal items of the soldiers, even Franz Ferdinand's car - all set out in structured sections and with explanations of the history and significance behind each one. This is a wonderful book, and a fine addition to the WW1 centenary publications.

This is a wonderful book full of very interesting objects associated with WWI. Some immediately recognisable and others not so. An incredibly fascinating read, combined with beautiful photographs. A treasure trove of information.

by Richard Keay
This is a beautifully illustrated book, and written concisely with the information generally kept to just a couple of pages per object. It's a very well chosen selection, including the obvious, such as tanks, trenches and barbed wire, to the less obvious such as prosthetic limbs and puttees. It is the often 'lesser' items in the book which really make the war more personal and bring it to life for the reader. Though of course a by no means definitive list of the 100 most 'important' objects of the war, through the 100 featured the author tells the story of the First World War in a more accessible and vivid way than would be possible in a straightforward textual history book. A fantastic book!
