Reviews: The Fix (6)
“A Fantastic Thriller”
(Paperback)
by atticusfinch1048
The Fix is the third book in the Amos Decker series and he is now a consultant to the FBI and based at the Hoover Building in Washington DC. A murder outside of the FBI headquarters and then the shooter kills himself and Decker is one of the many witnesses. The killer also happened to have an FBI pass for the building and had been at a contractor meeting that very morning. As they begin their investigation they are joined by an agent of the Defence Intelligence Agency who seems to block every avenue of investigation in the case. The killer had been a very happy family man and business owner which does not equate with him killing himself. It is only as Decker and his memory begins to work overtime that he begins to formulate questions that need to be asked. There had to be a reason why he shot someone he had no connection too and then kill himself which was making it harder to unravel the reasons behind the murder. It is when the answer start coming in to focus on Decker’s mind that things begin to happen in the investigation. When he sees the bigger picture, he begins to unravel a plot or plots against America. This is when Decker realises that this is going to be a fight to the death. This is a rollercoaster ride of a thriller, and you still cannot see the twists and turns in this book. Another fantastic thriller.
“A "Different" Detective”
(Paperback)
by Paul Lane
This is the third book by Mr Baldacci featuring one of the most extraordinary protagonists I've read about. He is Amos Decker; a big man, greatly overweight and gifted with perfect recall. The author has created several leading characters in the over 30 novels he has written since exploding onto the literary scene, but Amos does stand out both as a character and in size and weight. He was a gifted football player and made it into the NFL but a vicious tackle caused some brain damage as well as physically ending his career. For some reason the damage gave him perfect recall of any situation, conversation and surroundings in his past. Decker also went through the trauma of having his family killed by someone out to get him. He lost interest in life, drew into himself and actually spent time living in a cardboard box. He finally got employment with the FBI and with his perfect memory helped the team he was assigned to solve crimes and get the perpetrators. The novel opens with Amos witnessing a murder and suicide right outside FBI headquarters. His team takes on the case and early on are stymied by finding no connection between the man shooting a woman and than turning the gun on himself. The man has a successful consulting business and the woman is a part time teacher also doing volunteer work at a hospital for terminal patients. While opening the investigation Harper Brown, an agent for the Defense Intelligence Agency contacts the FBI group and orders them off the case due to it being an underlying factor in a matter of national emergency. "The game is now afoot" as Sherlock Holmes said many times when entering a case. And that is what Amos Decker is to be compared to. He has the ability to completely reconstruct any situation and circumstance in his mind that he has looked at and slowly examine it again. That was the method that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle postulated for Holmes in solving crimes. He looked at situations that others also saw and came up with logical conclusions that weren't seen by them. Incidental to the investigation going on Amos is seen making a valiant effort to lose weight, he has an on again, off again interest in a girl working on his team. And he is constantly analyzing his personal situation trying to bring himself into a normalcy he feels is prevented by his perfect memory. There is definitely going to be a very welcome fourth book featuring Decker with no doubt that it will be as interesting as the first three.
“Brilliant!!!”
(Hardback)
by Fiona Sharp
I have probably read most if not all of David Baldacci's adult fiction books.. I will be honest and say I favour the camel club series usually but this new series is fantastic!!! So I was over the moon to meet David and be given this signed dedicated copy from him, thanks to the wonderful publishers for organising the event! Murder and suicide in broad daylight in front of witnesses kicks this fast paced brilliant thriller off. Most certainly recommend.
