Reviews: The Fran Lebowitz Reader (1)
“‘Ask your child what he wants for dinner only if he’s buying.’”
(Paperback)
I watched ‘Pretend it’s a City’ on Netflix and I enjoyed it so much I wanted more. I was so glad to discover this book.
Some of these essays are forty years old and the age shows. I’m not sure you could advocate smoking for children quite as often, however funny it might be. The article concerning CB radios made me feel old but also reminded me of something I had nearly forgotten. These essays are a joy. The wit in them is comes with a cutting edge. It gives a window into New York in an interesting period. Her complaints about landlords are hilarious and can probably still be applied to this day.
I wish we had more of her writing in the UK. I think I would try and read it all.
