Reviews: The Kill (4)
“A gripping story”
(Paperback)
I have been a fan of Evie's work for a couple of years now. I have read and loved each and every book that she has written to date. When I heard that Evie was due to release another book, I knew that I had to grab a copy at the earliest opportunity and squirrel myself away until I had read the last word on the last page. Well ladies and gents the wait is over because Evie's new book is called 'The Kill' and it was released on 13th March 2023. It's another cracking read from Evie. I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'The Kill' but more about that in a bit.
I was drawn into this story from the synopsis alone. Then when I started reading the story itself, I instinctively knew that I wasn't going to be putting my Kindle down any time soon. I was blown away by the story and I liked the variety of characters, even if most of them did scare the doo doo out of me. I started reading and didn't stop until I had read over a third of the book in one go. My Kindle was well travelled that day because it went everywhere with me. I couldn't bear to miss a single second of the story. The more of the story that I read, the more I wanted to read and the quicker the pages seemed to turn. I became so wrapped up in the story and in the lives of the different characters that I lost all track of time and just how quickly I was getting through the story. All too quickly I reached the end of 'The Kill'. I found 'The Kill' to be a tense, gritty, gripping and dramatic read, which certainly kept me guessing and kept me on the edge of my seat throughout.
'The Kill' is superbly written but then I have come to expect nothing less from Evie Hunter. Evie certainly knows how to grab the reader's attention and draw them into what proves to be one hell of a story. For me, the story hit the ground running and maintained a fast pace throughout. Evie clearly cares about her characters and this shines through in the very vivid and realistic way in which she describes them. She makes her characters seem just as real as you and I. Reading 'The Kill' felt like being on a scary and unpredictable rollercoaster ride with several twists and turns along the way. On more than one occasion I almost had to read through my fingers as I feared what was going to happen next. I love the way in which Evie makes the reader feel as though they are part of the story themselves and at the heart of the action.
In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'The Kill' and I would have no hesitation in recommending this book to other readers. I will certainly be reading more of Evie's work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.
“Great gangland book.”
(Paperback)
I have read all of Evie's books and they have never disappointed me.
This lady writes clear descriptions making it easy to follow. This book is another crime thriller with not too much violence, but theirs a heck of a lot more going on to keep the reader satisfied.
If you haven't read any of Evie's books where have you been? You missed have out on a brilliant crime writer.
“A good read.”
(Paperback)
When Seb Carter is released from prison, after serving 6 years for a crime he did not commit, he vows to seek revenge. The book is well written and moves at a steady pace, with excellent characterisation. It kept me interested from the beginning, it flowed well but I felt the ending was just a bit rushed. I enjoyed it though and would recommend it. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.
“Didn't do a lot for me!”
(Paperback)
After six years in prison for a murder he did not commit, Sebastian Carter returns home to meet his sister Lily who has a damaged mind and is being cared for by Ava Harper. Seb realises that the person responsible for getting him incarcerated must be close to him and is determined to find him.
‘The Kill’ is the fourth thriller I’ve read by Evie Hunter and although I enjoyed those previously this latest one didn’t do a lot for me. At the beginning it concentrated on Lily, her damaged mind and attack which was unpleasant and unnecessary, but the story was mundane and lacked excitement, and I couldn’t work up any enthusiasm for the characters. I’d been looking forward to reading it and am sorry I couldn’t find anything positive to say about it but this is solely my opinion and I’m sure other readers will enjoy it.
