Reviews: The Long Weekend (4)
“Made for a haunting weekend”
(Paperback)
by Susan Hicks
Loved this book. Very chilling and kept me guessing right to the end. More of a mystery/suspense than a thriller but was well plotted and now I know what I know will read it again and look for the clues. If you like Sixth Sense or Gone Girl you should like this. Really couldn't put it down.
“Really great female villain”
(Paperback)
by David Softly
I wasn't expecting to enjoy this as much as I did because it is mainly a book about women for women (I'm guessing) but I really got hooked by the mystery of the two young girls and wanted to find out what hapened to them. I also felt sorry for Hazel, who although crazy, led such an abused life it wasn't surprising she turned out the way she did (hope that's not a spoiler). There is a sad outcome and some of it is quite distressing. It isn't fast paced but I don't think its meant to be. More of a secretive family mystery with a slow build up that digs deep. Definitely grim at times but chilling too. Remind me never to stay in a remote lighthouse. Thought the ending was great and I really didn't twig a thing. Never saw it coming at all. Will check this author out again.
“Boring!”
(Paperback)
by Diana Morgan
I am an avid reader of crime/thriller/suspense/horror novels. This book was none of the above! Too many references to the past, very slow, too much irrelevant detail. It took me three weeks too read this book and usually a paperback takes me a day to read if it's good.
“DISSAPPOINTED”
(Paperback)
by Janet Anne Mitchell
This paperback did not live up to it's promise. A mish mash of writing styles. The author seemed to be making a desperate attempt in re-producing a Stephen King style thriller, she failed miserably. The main characters were very dislikable, having no redeeming features. Far too many long, tedious flashbacks, some of it in very bad taste and not relevant at times, the plot line was slow and clumsy. It felt like the author was trying too hard to impress the reader, I for one, was not really interested in the constant description of Hazel Ladd's designer wear! What can I say about the final chapter, well for one thing, I am amazed that I got to it! Zzzzzzzzzzzz
