Shannon does not let down with the second book in The Bone Season series. There was always a slight fear that it would not live up to the expectation of the first book in the series but that is not an issue whatsoever. The Mime Order throws you into the world of Paige and you see London in a new light. You are sent on an emotional roller coaster reading the book and it will leave you wanting more.

This is just as good as the first one, if not better! Samantha Shannon has a brilliant knack for telling stories. I'm excited for what the next book will bring.

I haven't been this excited about a series since I first read harry Potter (that was a while ago and I LOVE Harry Potter with all my heart!). I am in awe of Shannons series and itching for more! Paige is a truly relatable character for me, and her willingness never fails to surprise me. This is an epically equal sequel with an ending that left me sitting, with my mind blown, wondering what life was before this book. The pace of the book was evenly spread and the plot was intricately woven together with gold threads of genius. It was a bit of a slow start for me having read the first book last year and then re-acquainting myself with the world of Scion, but once I was back in I was hooked once more. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a new series to follow to the end of the earth, I certainly will be!!!

A terrific return to the world of Scion, which continues to be one of the best fantasy series’s around. This book is rich in detail and strong in development, with Paige growing ever more powerful in character. There’s no doubt that Shannon is an incredible writer, but this sequel cements her as one of my favourites. It offers more twists and mysteries, whilst continuing this eerie feeling of panic. With the action all happening in London, everything felt more dangerous and chaotic. There’s far more politics to manoeuvre around, especially with Jaxon. His and Paige’s dynamic was absolutely stunning but equally terrifying. I genuinely never guessed what would happen next. Paige and Warden were the gift that kept on giving, and I was just so happy to have them back. It’s so beautiful to have a relationship built on trust and respect, especially in the dangerous times they live in. They offer a light in the dark of Scion’s London. Every page of this book was immaculately crafted. I’m incredibly impressed by the sheer depth of this story.

The Mime Order follows Paige Mahoney after she returns to London from Oxford and further goes into the trials and tribulations she must face after what she discovered about The Bone Season. This book is part of a series which is currently unfinished. Honestly, I genuinely loved everything about this book. I thought I was going to have to read an online summary of The Bone Season to get back into this book because it had been a while since I’d read the first book but instead I was instantly transported back into the story. I really enjoy Shannon’s writing style and it’s something I find incredibly immersive. I am deeply loving the slow-burn of the characters and I found that this book focused a lot more on getting to know the magic system and that we also got an opportunity to see this in action a lot more which helped to maintain a consistent pace throughout the book. One particular action scene had my heart racing so much that I had to swap from reading it on my Kindle to reading it physically because I needed to hold the book in my hand. This book did not make me cry but it did shock me quite significantly. In hindsight I think the shock is quite obvious and I think I did toy with the shock throughout reading the book, but it still packed a punch when I read it, and I think that’s a great skill which Shannon possesses. There isn’t anything I disliked about the book. I thought the length was perfect, the character development was spot-on, and the writing style is easily one of my favourites to read. Overall, I think this would be an incredible read for those who like dystopian fiction, fantasy fiction, slow-burn tropes, detailed magic systems and a very strong female lead. This is easily one of my top books of 2025.
