Reviews: The Old Ways (3)
“An armchair voyage along the Old Ways”
(Paperback)
I have loved every page of this book, Robert Macfarlane’s journeys along the Old Ways are brought vividly to life, the words at times are all most poetic. I have sat in my armchair and imagined I was taking every step with him, his descriptions bringing every way to life. Fabulous.
“I don't read non-fiction ......”
(Paperback)
but I couldn't resist the idea of this book, probably as I enjoy walking.
I was gripped form the start, with his description of a snowy moon lit walk giving me goose bumps. For each of the walks he describes his language is so compelling you can smell the locale and hear the sounds with him.
Loved it
“Brilliant book to finish 2012 on”
(Paperback)
Another beautifully written book by Macfarlane.
These are the accounts of a series of walks and journeys that he made alone and with others in the UK and in Spain, the himalayas and Palestine. In it were two boat journeys out to the small rocks that punctuate the sea off the west coast of Scotland.
As with his previous books, the prose is considered and measured and the sense of place and purpose is written with clarity. The walking may be laboured, but the text isn't.
