Reviews: The Olive Branch (6)
“Not my favourite”
(Paperback)
I love Jo Thomas but sadly this one wasn't my favourite. I don't come to Jo for Shakespeare but light-hearted, feel-good romance and escapism. Normally, her relaxed, holiday romance style is right up my street but this one missed the mark for me. I felt like the book could have been a quarter of the size as there is a lot of repetition with the main character continually stating the same emotions and ideas multiple times. The story progresses slowly, if the book was smaller I think it would have been more enjoyable, but as the story is quite predictable (it's a romance novel so you know what's going to happen early on) you just want it to speed up and get to the point. I also found the protagonist a bit annoying. For example, the whole way through she's saying that she wants to leave the house but you know that she doesn't, she says that she doesn't like Marco but she clearly does etc. I didn't believe in the character development, her emotions were clear from the beginning. However, the setting of Italy is very beautiful and the ending is very sweet. I would recommend Late Summer in the Vineyard and My Lemon Grove Summer by Jo. I still think she's fab.
