Reviews: The Patchwork Girl (1)
“Horrific, yet hopeful. A gripping account.”
(Paperback)
by Julie Haigh
On starting this I thought: Yet another drugs, county lines, abuse theme. Have I read too many of these types of books in a short space of time? Should I read something lighter? But I kept being pulled back to it. It goes back to earlier; before the events; her childhood and upbringing. I loved all the backstory; the normal stuff, before the terrible happenings to come. A normal family and childhood. Then things changed. It was easy and quick to read, and kept my interest. Very readable, well put-together, balancing bad times with happier memories; childhood scenes etc. But there are awful circumstances. Truly shocking. It sounds wrong to say it was an easy read-because the circumstances were so horribly hard, but it really was. It was written in a conversational style, as if the author was sat there telling her story to me, and I just couldn't tear my eyes away as I kept on turning the pages, frantically hoping things would get better for this girl. A bit different to the others I've read in this genre, unpredictable. An excellent and very powerful account.
