Reviews: The Pitards (1)
“Tonnerre-de-Dieu”
(Paperback)
by Keith Currie
It is the first voyage of the tramp cargo ship Captain Lannec has finally been able to purchase (with the help of money from his wife's family). Lannec's wife has insisted on accompanying him on the voyage, but this leads to discord and ultimate disaster and death. Why does she refuse to leave the ship and return home? Mistrust, suspected fraud and secret threats all combine to create an atmosphere of purest poison. Add a dramatic rescue attempt on a stricken trawler, missed deadlines for delivery of cargo and Lannec's troubles are not confined to ship-board. I am always amazed how Simenon can combine so much plot in so few words. This short novel is a classic page-turner and is highly recommended.
