Reviews: The Problem Drinker (1)
“The Problem Drinker”
(Paperback)
I have to admit that prior to reading this book I had never really heard of this guy! I only knew OF him through following Travis on social media and learning that he stars in and has composed the music for the short film that this book was made into. The film being released prior to the book - which is a novelty in itself!
It follows Kyle as he struggles with his art... especially as, at the time, his partner is finding success with hers. What follows is a series of anecdotes, and vignettes all revolving around drinking...
It's brutal, warts and all, and also slightly self-indulgent and occasionally a bit whiny, which isn't surprising considering it's a memoir - goes with the territory.
It's also very readable - I think we are predominantly on the same wavelength, which helps. But it is also quite emotional in places and you can see glimpses of what the drinking is hiding.
He does name drop a bit - but tbh, if that's his connection and he is "part of that family" and that is part of his story, why not... It is, after all, the way I found him in the first place so who am I to comment...
It's full of scenes where we appear to nearly get somewhere but then we fade away... I'm not sure of the point of half of them but appreciate that it also appears to be a work in progress - as is the author and his profession - maybe this book, and associated film, will be some kind of spark for him... I'm definitely going to be keeping an eye out..
