Reviews: The Question (1)
“A Triangular Love Story”
(Paperback)
The Question is a triangular love story with John at the centre of the plot,a chance remark on the phone made by John's Secretary to his wife Eleanor of 20 years leads her to the realisation that John is having an affair. It is clever and well-thought out, but Eleanor turns out to be a snob (see the scene where she tells Susan not to drink Blue Nun!)and the story can be very slow. The premise seems to be based on a real incident with the author exorcising her anxieties. If some of the more repetitive bits were cut, e.g. the constant 'Dick Van Dyke' when Eleanor is cooking, it may have been better.
The chapters where Susan meets Robbie, a fellow paraplegic, in the hospital, started well, but disintegrated just as the reader thought these were going somewhere. The whole book could have worked better if edited down to a short story or novella. The group gave the book a mark of 5 out of 10.
