Reviews: The Time Machine (9)
“Excellent weirdness”
(Paperback)
A great adventure and slightly weird … which is what you want in a time travel story.
I like the author’s choice of how the London landscape changed over 800,000 years.
The characters he met in 802,701 were not what I was expecting at all. However, there’s a statement being made about Victorian society and what it evolves into.
Particularly enjoy the scenes at The Time Traveller’s house where a cohort of unnamed professionals are gathering.
“The Time Machine by HG Wells”
(Paperback)
The Time Machine by H G Wells was a story I listened to on Audible. At first it sounded very old fashioned and dated but then the narrator conjured up different worlds and aliens and the storyline took on its own momentum.
I enjoyed listening to The Time Machine and look forward to listening to more stories by the author.
Highly recommended
“Classic science fiction”
(Paperback)
The time machine. It's odd but it took me a very long time to get around to reading this book. I'm a huge doctor who fan so you'd think reading one of the major influences on the show would have been something I'd have done decades ago. When I finally did read this I was a little bit disappointed. I found it quite hard going. Not the plot which is imaginative and interesting. No, it was the writing itself. This felt so much more flowery than his other work. It was published in 1895, only three years before war of the worlds yet it feels very different to that book. The characters are well drawn and as I say, the plot is good but the prose was hard going. It's definitely not a bad book but it's one I won't rush back to.
“An essential novella.”
(Paperback)
A classic science fiction novella that is so much more than science fiction. The Time Machine asks questions about the future of humanity, the future of the social class system (of the Victorian era, but of course it is still relevant)...
H. G. Wells blends science fiction and social commentary seamlessly. The novella focuses on the Time Traveller stuck in an unrecognisable future looking for his time machine, he encounters humanity's descendants... The human race has divided into two distinct species - the Eloi (the feeble and idle representatives of the upper class) and the Morlocks (the brutish representatives of the lower class). You have to read The Time Machine or else I'll be giving the plot away.
Anyway, The Time Machine is a thrilling tale of a man stuck in an unfamiliar time and place, on a quest to get back home. The Time Machine is a classic piece of science fiction, a great work that is hugely influential. It is a great novella that could be read again and again. You must read this. Also read The Island of Doctor Moreau by Wells as well, that is fab too.
