Reviews: The Trophy Taker (1)
“The Trophy Taker”
(Paperback)
by Rachel Bridgeman
Lee Weeks could only be considered the female James Patterson for her annoying habit of brief chapters, sometimes of less than a page. This made the flow of the book awkward and disjointed whereas another author may successfully switch narrator, this just led to confusion. The premise was interesting, the cover similar to Blood Brothers by Jack Kerley but this tale of murdered Gwaipos or non-Chinese tourist women sucked into the nightclub scene of Hong Kong seemed ill advised and was neither police procedural, examining a pertinent social phenomena of how easily people disappear or a coming of age story of the main female character who had come to Hong Kong to find herself. The detective was unconvincing, the female character forgettable-in fact the author forgot about her and she went missing for a few chapters before turning up kidnapped by the villain, the motive of the murdere was crass.By the end of the book I no longer cared Whodunnit, I just wanted the book over with.To me this was yet another cash in on the psychological thriller genre where publishers are churning them out into an already saturated market that has enough talented writers in it.
