Reviews: The Two (1)
“Mind blowing...”
(Paperback)
I remember enjoying Will's debut book Girl 4 immensely, and was greatly anticipating The Two. Will's voice has really developed and true to the Carver style, the story is a roller-coaster! There are highs and lows of every emotion, if you read this book and remain apathetic, then you need help! It invokes so many emotions which make for all the more compelling reading.
January, Paulson and Murphy all make their return on another high profile serial killer case, the victims being killed in some ritualistic method in public areas and in plain sight. You are taken all over London with intimate detail and an obvious razor sharp observation of people's behaviour and social interaction, effortlessly creating a deep and rich story that's as thrilling as it is entertaining.
The book, it's characters and their story is intoxicating, I found myself visiting this world that Carver has created in my subconscious wondering what's going to happen next? Why hasn't January and Paulson picked up on that clue? Who are these freaky children that visit January's nightmares/dreams? What are they trying to tell him? When is Murphy going to get what's coming to him!?
The book is laid out in a way which frequently leaves you thinking "What's going on!?", but at several points during the book you are gifted with nuggets of information which tie up the loose ends and create many eureka moments, moments of clarity! It does come together beautifully at the end and it's a very rewarding read.
I implore you to experience The Two and Girl 4, it's a marvel whether you like it or not. You will be an early reader of a future superstar author and character, like reading Angels and Demons and discovering Robert Langdon back in 2000.
