“"The Vanquished - why the First World War failed to end, 1917-1923" by Robert Gerwarth”
(Hardback)
Professor Gerwarth comments that for most British people and many others in the West, the First World War ended on the 11th November 1918. Almost certainly this is the belief that most people in the UK have to this day although some may have an awareness that there were battles after 1918 following the takeover of Russia by the Communists in 1917. However, Professor Gerwarth clearly shows that the war did not end in November 1918 for the peoples of Central and Eastern Europe and he demonstrates vividly that the problems, mayhem and mass slaughter continued for several years after 1918. This book is truly thought provoking particularly when it is borne in mind that within two decades another, even more brutal war, had broken out, and even, at the end of that war, history repeated itself with millions of people being moved from country to country under what nowadays might be called ethnic cleansing. No wonder that one of the reasons for the 1957 Treaty of Rome was "never again".
