Reviews: Threadbare (1)
“A brilliant read*.”
(Paperback)
I have been a fan of Malcolm's work for a fair while now. I love the way in which he writes about the more unusual sorts of crimes. Another big plus for me is the fact that he sets his books in the North East (well Harrogate is in the North) of England, which is where I live. I read the synopsis for 'Threadbare' and it certainly sounded like another amazing read from Malcolm. I must be psychic (or psychopathic) because 'Threadbare' is definitely an amazing read and I enjoyed every single minute of it but more about that in a bit.
I love the detective pairing of Cyril and Owen. When the story begins Cyril has only just proposed to his girlfriend and the story then moves forward to the wedding and subsequent honeymoon. Cyril takes more of a back seat in this story but his absence gives Owen a chance to shine. Owen is Cyril's best friend, close colleague and he is Cyril's best man. Owen has also recently been promoted to Inspector so with the promotion comes extra responsibility. Owen is a bit nervous but I was keeping everything crossed that he would shine and not let his nerves get the better of him. Cyril and Owen work really well together and each man's personality complements the other man's. I hope that makes sense.
It didn't take me long at all to get into 'Threadbare'. In fact by the time I got to the end of the Prologue, I knew that this was going to be one book that would be impossible to put down. From the moment I first picked the book up until the moment I read the last word on the last page, I was completely under this book's spell. I had to sit and read the book in one long reading binge. It's rare that I am able to concentrate for that long and I am easily distracted but not in this case. There was so much going on that I feared I might miss out on something if I put the book to one side. It took me a few hours but I closed the back cover of the book with a contented sigh.
'Threadbare' is absolutely brilliantly written. As I mention at the beginning of my review, Malcolm certainly has a knack for writing crime novels, featuring the more unusual of crimes. These unusual crimes certainly grab your attention and draw you into the story. I totally immersed myself in this story to the extent that I felt as though I was part of the story myself and that I was helping Owen with the investigation! Yes I know this is a work of fiction but I find that if I enjoy a book to the extent that I enjoyed this one, then I tend to 'live' the story as if it were real. I loved the fact that Malcolm writes about Harrogate, which is somewhere I am familiar with having visited it many times with family. Plus Harrogate is in the North East of England, which is where I live. I also loved the reference to Tennant's Auction Rooms in Leyburn.
In short, 'Threadbare' is another amazing book from Malcolm, which I would have no hesitation in recommending to other readers. I will definitely be reading more of Malcolm's work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.
