I am a big Nora Roberts fan, but I think this is her best book to date. Not easy reading at times, especially at the beginning, and I was on the edge of my seat for a lot of the time - one of those books I wanted to keep reading every minute, but equally didn't want to finish too quickly so it would be over! It was set in two parts, when Zane and Brit were younger and lived with their abusive parents, and the current day when they are adults. Brit stayed in her hometown, but Zane left and has only just returned to put down roots again. Darby, a very gifted garden landscaper, has recently moved to town after moving around for a bit after leaving an abusive relationship with her ex, and her Mother dying. I just loved the characters in this book, Darby especially was a force of nature! She made me really want to get a garden designer in, and I've definitely made note of a few different plants mentioned! But every character was just so great in their own right. The first part is quite harrowing and definitely heart pounding reading a lot of the time, then it seemed to calm down a little bit and life returned to 'normal' and moved on in years, but then the edge of the seat reading was back again, a real roller-coaster of a read, but absolutely riveting. It's hard to review it too much without giving the story away, but it was just sooo good! Another great benefit of this audiobook is that I've found a new favourite narrator, as January LaVoy did a fabulous job of the narrating, you could just lose yourself in the story, the power of a great narrator, making a great book even greater. So for anybody wondering whether to read/listen to this book I would highly recommend you rush out and buy it, Nora Roberts has written yet another heart-stopping, page-turning hit.

Do you like romance novels, family dramas or crime novels? Well this book has it all wrapped up in one. This is one of Nora Roberts standalone novels, and the first of her books I've ever read. Darby, having escaped an abusive Husband, looks for a place to live, somewhere in another part of the country. Preferably a place with a view of trees and lakes. She eventually found the ideal place, a place she had never heard of before, but having checked it out on the internet it suited exactly what she was looking for. So, having sold her house and her business, she packed up all her wordly goods in her car and headed off. What comes next for Darby is lots of hard work, new friends, a romantic interest and murder. The author has weaved all of this into one extremely well written novel, which was very hard to put down. Her style of writing is very descriptive. I could almost smell the flowers she wrote about, and picture the boats on the lake. I could see all the delightful houses she described and imagine myself being there. I could also picture the characters as if I knew them personally. I really loved how different families lives were weaved together. The murder and intrigue in the book, blended very well with the family drama's and happy times. This has to be one of the best books that I've read this year. I didn't want it to end, and would love to have seen a follow up to it as I'll miss the characters. I thoroughly recommend this read, and I will certainly be checking out more of Nora Roberts standalone novels.

A thoroughly great read. Nora Roberts has produced another great novel. Gritty, violent in places and romance. Believable characters you get drawn to. Recommended.

“Under Currents” was my first Nora Roberts novel, so I went into this with no preconceptions other then I knew she was the number one New York Times bestselling author of more than 200 novels. It was obvious from the first few pages alone that this was a seasoned author who knows exactly how to draw the reader in early on. I was utterly engrossed in this brutal and hard hitting romantic suspense story, so much so that there were times I could barely blink as the tension ratcheted up. Focusing on spousal and child domestic abuse, it was exceedingly hard to read at times and a definite trigger for anyone who may be affected by this subject but it was a truly well written and brilliantly researched book into the emotions that goes into the victims of abuse and their fears of retribution if they speak out. There were three parts to the story. The first was a gut-wrenching and very emotional account of brother and sister Zane and Britt and their lives with their abusive father and powerless mother. The second part, many years later featured the introduction of Darby McCray, a landscape gardener looking to set up her business in Lakeview at the same time Zane decides to return home there. This is where you feel a false sense of security as you just know that when the third part arrives it’s all going to kick off again. Brilliantly written however, the denouement was rather expected but I enjoyed the build up to it regardless and the romantic element although slightly cheesy in a realistic world was tastefully written and suited the ambience of the characters, location and plot. I loved Zane, a character to truly endear to and fall a little in love with and even though Darby was a talented landscape gardener who could more than take care of herself, I couldn’t help but feel a little jealousy as she started to befriend Zane! All in all a fabulous family saga with a romantic suspense element that had me hooked from the very first page and with the attention to detail in the different plants and growing techniques, I now feel energised for a spot of gardening myself! 4 stars and I will definitely be reading more by Nora Roberts again.
