Reviews: Vicious (15)
“Couldn't put it down”
(Paperback)
Wow. This author can do no wrong I swear. This is my 3rd book I've read now from Schwab and I cant get enough!
“An incredible superhero tale way ahead of its time!”
(Paperback)
We find ourselves in a thrilling world of EO’s or superheroes to you and me, and Victor and Eli are experimenting with the idea that EO’s are made not born, which ultimately has crippling consequences. It is brilliant paced and keeps you on your toes as it darts back and forth in the timeline between each of the main character’s viewpoints. In a world that now seems obsessed with superhero movies and tv shows, this book was way ahead of it’s time and perfectly refreshes the genre!
“Fabulous urban fantasy”
(Paperback)
Loved this book. Plot moves at great pace, goodies are baddies and baddies are goodies! Or are they? Will definitely be reading more from this author.
“One of my favourite reads”
(Paperback)
This was absolutely glorious. Chef's kiss.
I haven't been so engrossed in a book so quickly in. I don't know. A while, a long while. I tend to find it hard sometimes jumping into a new universe and getting to know new characters. But Schwab's narrative web is beautifully woven, and what hooked me was the intrigue, the way characters allude to little things the way actual people would in discussion, instead of giving a whole play-by-play recap "previously in Victor's life". The different timelines helped with keeping me interested too, knowing the hatred in the 'present' and wanting to see how we got there kept me going on and on.
The characters are beautifully written, very complex. I loved that there were no good guys and bad guys. Everyone was the villain in someone else's story, and that felt very realistic to me. They're all shades of grey, they all make mistakes, some of them embrace them, some of them don't, and that's terribly human, and it made them all the more realistic and believable.
I loved the beginning, the middle and the end, and I cannot wait to pick up book 2 and be absolutely wrecked again.
“Absolutely fascinating!”
(Paperback)
I read Vicious for the first time two years ago, and I have been meaning to write a review ever since, but I can never find the words. After a re-read, I still don't have the right words to describe the utter awe and love that I have for Vicious. Vicious is an embodiment of everything I have ever wanted from a story; antiheroes, villains, betrayal, and revenge. Villains and antiheroes have always intrigued me and more often than not, I root for them in books and movies. More than that, I find the line between villains and heroes, and what makes a person one of either, absolutely fascinating. Vicious tackles all of that and Schwab delivers magnificent story with so many favourite quotes of mine. Needless to say that Vicious has been one of my all time favourite books for years - and a re-read only solidified more.
I could wax poetry for hours about Vicious. It's so insightful and deep, but there's plenty of action and mystery to make it captivating and a ultimate page turner. The structure is perfect for the story, the multiple timelines are woven together so seamlessly that the story flows oh so beautifully. It's brilliant. Even more so are the characters. In Victor Vale's words, there are no good men here - and it can be applied to the female characters, too. No one's innocent and that's what makes it all interesting. It's fascinating to be inside the heads of people who aren't good but not necessarily bad either (well, not all of them, I maintain that Eli and Serena are worst). Victor Vale is my favourite and I will never stop rooting for him. Mitch and Dol are precious and should be protected at all cost. Nevertheless, Schwab's magic here is that she makes a reader to understand everyone's motives and perspective; I did understand everyone, even if I didn't like them.
I cannot recommend Vicious enough. Read it!
