“Who needs superheroes anyway?”
(Paperback)
Having enjoyed the film so much I decided to purchase the graphic novel upon which it was based. It was hardly worth them bothering to adapt it, all they had to do was change the names of the 2 lead characters and they could have avoided having to pay out any royalties.
I'm not going to bother comparing this to it's film adaption, they're just so different it would take forever. So the graphic novel...
I loved this. I've never been much of a fan of your typical superhero comic, I hate superman, spiderman... so Wanted is an excellent change of scene. Supervillians that are truly villianous. Not the usual trying to take over the world nonsense - but the real evil, nihilistic, get the job done sort of nasty.
The artwork is vivid and violent, the diologue is snappy and to the point, the characters are fully developed and strangely likeable. The attitudes within this really should anger and upset me, but they don't. And I was rather disturbed to discover the slightly sadistic smile on my face as I viewed the final colour plate.
If you want a comic book that has all the traditional elements and then turns them on their head - then this is for you.
“Thumbs Up!”
(Paperback)
Some works move you, some works give you pause for thought. This one spits in your face then tells you to cut your hair and get a job. But you could just follow along passively as a good little reader and enjoy this entertaining romp. It has a great hook after all.
What would happen if super villains took over the world? Not the one dimensional, death-ray constructing, megalomaniacs of other comics but cold, calculating, Machiavellian minds. It certainly makes for an interesting place. Then what would happen if Average Joe Loser woke up to find himself head super villain. Ultimate power and NO responsibility. Hell yeah!
An enjoyable story but who is it really about? In the words of Spartacus “I’m Wesley Gibson.” “No, I’M Wesley Gibson!” Mark Millar could very well be our new Jonathan Swift. A really cracking read with excellent art! Thumbs Up!
