This is a wonderful book. I came across it in the children’s section of my local library and didn’t hesitate to buy a copy to add to my personal collection. At first glance, the book features illustrations of a young girl playing in the sea with the waves. The sea takes up the child’s invitation and joins in her game, creating moments that are a true delight to behold. But behind the girl’s innocent play there is more than meets the eye. Suzy Lee plays with the physical format of the book and presents two worlds divided by the gutter between the pages, as if it were the world of Alice in Wonderland. In this way, she creates two spaces that respond to each other in a natural and fluid manner, with blue and white standing out to give the story a sense of freshness. It is also refreshing to observe how naturally the girl is portrayed on every page, as well as the waves’ response to each of her movements. Without claiming to be an expert on Suzy Lee’s work, I found this book utterly delightful. It has left me eager to discover more about the author, and I would wholeheartedly recommend Wave to anyone interested in illustrated books.
