Reviews: We Have No Idea (1)
“Good, but bad!!”
(Paperback)
The book was written in a witty and entertaining way and tries to introduce new people to the strange, wonderful and complex subject that is physics. The authors tell the story of the Univers as representatives of the Big Bang Theory and hope to help you understand it better.
But I think this is their first flaw. They simplify this matter too much and present their beliefs as if they were proven facts. While it is true that the Big Bang-Modell is widely accepted among scientist and so are related matters such as dark Matter & Energy, these extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and all of these theories are not even close the be proven.
To show what I will try to give you an overview of our current understanding of Dark Matter as well as a - hopefully - objective look at its scientific basis.
As we understand it to the point this is written, Dark Matter is a type of matter, which interacts with its surrounding (itself and normal matter) via the gravitational force. It isn´t affected by any of the other fundamental forces, which means it is invisible to us.
But here emerges my problem with the book.
They state a variety of different "proves" for their belive, without even mentioning any counterarguments.
It may be a short paragraph for the actual reasoning of the bad review, but that's all that´s to it. They fail to give an unbiased overview of the topic and present it as if it were already proven. Furthermore, they simplify the matter too much, and while I do realize that the targeted audience is rather new to the topic it saddens me to see that the first book they encounter is this one, because it will probably have the opposite on them than intended. It is most likely that they will not consider any other model after having read this book and will move on with their lives having understood the inner working of our Univers, not questioning what has been taught to them.
Overall it is a funny book and very accessible but it fails to give an unbiased overview.
I have liked a book that should provide such an unbiased view (well not totally, as nobody is completely unbiased), but trades in for it its simplicity and accessibility. But that's how it is !!! The world is that simple.
By the way: If the comment seems a bit rushed to the end or ill-structured, this can be attributed to the fact that it is 12 minutes after midnight where I live and that I´m rather tired.
And also I´m from Germany so please excuse my grammatical errors and small vocabulary.
And sssttttiiilllll also thanks for reading this review(if anyone has). In the end I had fun writing it, even though I really want to sleep.
So - before I continue to write for all eternity - Good Night / Gute Nacht
