Reviews: Weirdo (18)
“So very real”
(Hardback)
I really enjoyed this book. I like the writing style, it seemed very real. I was totally rooting for the main character, I wanted her to sort her life out and be happy. I have read some other reviews that didn’t like the ending, it’s a slice of life and you just get to drop in and then it’s done. I definitely recommend this book, I think it might be marmite, for me, I loved it. Thank you #netgalley
“Interesting characters carefully crafted”
(Hardback)
Having been amused by Sara Pascoe on 'The Great British Sewing Bee' I was intrigued as to what her writing style would be like as a book author. I enjoyed 'Weirdo' with some interesting characters carefully crafted with the humour often coming from their personalities. I was left wondering if there would be a follow up book to continue the story.
“Captivating story-teller strikes again”
(Hardback)
I've always adored Sara's writing, so funny and informal and vulnerable. This debut novel is clearly a path the comedian should follow as I couldn't put it down. Fans should also read her previous books that are easily the most interesting books I've ever read, tackling the natural/unnatural behaviours of humans in a clever, funny way. I can't wait to read whatever she produces next.
“An hilarious and brutal debut about being lost in your 30s”
(Hardback)
Sophie is in a relationship which she wants to but doesn't know how to end and her sister is engaged to her ex. She has had a series of low paid and demeaning jobs. When she bumps into a guy who she used to have a thing for, Sophie convinces herself that if she gets close to him, she can turn things around
Content warning: discusses mental health, abortion, miscarriage and sexual assault
If you enjoy Pascoe's standup or her TV show, Out Of Her Mind, you should enjoy this book. Pascoe is a great comedian because she understands people and is brutally honest. She is able to verbalise in her comedy and her prose, universal human experiences and feelings.
I am far more likely to laugh out loud at TV and film than I am at a book, but WEIRDO had me laughing throughout. Pascoe deals sensitively and intelligently with some very serious subjects, while maintaining her dark sense of humour.
The first person narrative reads as the inner monologue of a 30-year-old suffering from extreme anxiety and low self-esteem. Sophie's thoughts are often selfish and mean but she is likable and sympathetic because we've all had these types of thoughts - we just don't voice them out loud.
As someone who has suffered from bad anxiety, I saw a lot of myself in Sophie. It was good to read something so honest, that dealt with mental health so well.
Just a generally great debut! Pascoe has brilliantly transferred her observational humour to her first novel and I enjoyed every minute of it. I can't wait for her next one.
“Poignant and quite sad, but enjoyable.”
(Hardback)
I was sent a copy of Weirdo by Sara Pascoe to read and review by NetGalley. It took me a while to get into the rhythm of this book, with incidental letters and emails etc popping up within the prose, and the protagonist’s butterfly thoughts, but once I got into it I whizzed through it. It was really entertaining, with some laugh out loud funny moments and one-liners, but ultimately I found this to be a very poignant and rather sad look at the life of a woman with low self esteem and feelings of hopelessness. I’m sure that most women will identify with at least one issue or other contained in this novel and I do believe that it might well make us readers think more carefully about what we do or say, and even feel more grateful for the lives we have. It may sound like I didn’t like this book but I did really enjoy it – it’s well worth a read on many levels.
