Thank you the author for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.
'When Gods Fall' was a return to a writing style in fantasy that I have been yearning for since I first started reading the genre. The world-building is absolutely fantastic. It's so unique and vivid. I want 10 more books in this world.
S.E. Bouvier promises a slow burn and does not disappoint. I love not knowing who the love interest will be. There are no obvious signposts meaning that you get to be right there with the characters as they realise they have a connection.
.I ABSOLUTELY LOVE KATELL. The best character in this book and in ALL books EVER. It's so intriguing to watch how her motivations and fears shape her journey, whether it be for the worse or for the better. What I love about Bouvier's writing is that the characters feel like they exist outside of the story we are reading. They have a past - that directly influences their present day. It makes them so much more complex. This makes the relationship between both sisters so endearing and realistic. Alena and Katell are very intriguing characters and I'm excited to explore how their relationship evolves in future books.
My only critique of the book would be about how slavery is talked about in certain parts of this book. Make no mistake, S. E. Bouvier makes it clear within the book that slavery is disgusting and not acceptable under any circumstances. However there are one or two moments, in terms of phrasing, that I think could do with a little sensitivity reading just to make sure the topic is handled with as much care as possible.
