Reviews: Why We Sleep (21)
“Essential reading”
(Paperback)
by Leilah at Doncaster
Essential reading for the modern age, a time filled with the sleep-starved and over-worked, who often spend their down-time glued to screens. Deeply fascinating and often alarming, this book will make you wonder why it isn't prescribed...
“It actually keeps you up at night! In a good way...”
(Paperback)
by Neil Ashcroft
It’s fascinating, in parts it’s terriffying if I’m honest but I’ve learned so much... putting some of it into practice is quite daunting but I’m sure I’m better for knowing it all! It’s a real myth-buster of a book and everyone should read it, internalise the facts and give it a chance to legitimately change your life.
“Fantastic and enlightening”

This book is amazing , covering the importance of sleep and its functions. How memories are made, how the salience network of the brain priorities these memories and put them In order of salience according to our memories and experiences How our bodies and their vital organs recover and replenish during sleep, our brains detoxified of the by products of synaptic energy removed , of which a build of these around the hippocampus our short term memory storage centre is known to be related to Alzheimer's . The inner workings of caffeine and its affects and disruption on our CNS. It's scary to think that as a shift worker and someone who never gets 8 hours sleep, I am at a higher risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and dementia , strange to think as a nurse I promote and encourage sleep but am never really getting the right amount myself
“Sleep like you’ve never considered it”
(Paperback)
by Georgi Kiryakov
This was a total eye opener! Great topic and so needed in times where “fast paced” had become a religion. One thing that made me realise how unfair the current status quo is that night owls are being ostracised and early birds are being rewarded in our (“Western”) society. This is very unfair. I wonder if this will every be dealt with appropriately given all the other societal problems we’ve got at the moment. The book is a must read by any audience.
“A book we all need to read”
(Paperback)
by Joanne Liddement
Everything you ever want to know about sleep is packed into this informative book by Professor Matthew Walker who has specialised this subject with over twenty years of research. I was especially interested in the research into the link between poor sleep and alzheimer's and the author gives an understanding as to possible causes. There is also hope in this book that one day in the not to distant future that there are things that will be done to halt this disease's progress. Why We Sleep covers everything from animals sleep behavior to human babies still in the womb and why teenagers sleep so late and the elderly who do not need so much sleep which after reading this book i found is the opposite as they need just as much as they ever did. A book which would benefit every one of us as poor sleep has a definite link to illness, disease and mental illness and it has really opened my eyes to how caffeine and alcohol and not following a proper sleep pattern has a negative effect to sleep quality. I received this book in exchange for my honest review #WhyWeSleep #NetGalley
