“Wow!”
(Paperback)
by Rachel Dean
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The subject is very heavy but it is written in a really accessible way and I loved the bat pig comics. I realise the book is aimed at younger readers but I thoroughly enjoyed it as an adult and got through it really quickly. Ross is a great character, aswell as the a main story being about how his cancer treatments affect him and how particularly difficult certain things are to deal with as a teenager, there are also lots of other themes. These include friendships, bullying, misjudging people. I found the descriptions of how the doctors handled giving the diagnosis and describing the treatments really interesting. I liked that the author shared his own story at the end and what had led him to write the book. Overall a really good read.
“Amazing book”
(Paperback)
by Amy Duffy
I have really enjoyed reading this book, it's a fiction book based around a school boy and cancer he was diagnosed with cancer around his eye, but it's also a real experience that happened with the author Rob Harrel who was diagnosed with cancer and went through everything the fictional character went through and how he felt, it has some light comic bits it is as the author believes laughter can be the best medicine when going through a tough time and I couldnt agree more, its heart warming to know that someone who has gone through such a terribly sad experience can help all types and ages or people with a bit of humour and some detail of everything he went through from his diagnosis to his treatments and how it affected him at school and with his friends. A truly amazing book that was very thoughtfully written
“Uplifting read for a difficult topic”
(Paperback)
by Katie Taylor
This story about a young boy named Ross centres around his cancer diagnosis. It shows how children can be strong in times of adversity and in places it really pulls on your heart strings. Ross has been diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing treatment with the prospect of losing his vision in both eyes. Not only that but he has to cope with general life as a youngster at school which is made all the more difficult as he has to wear a hat to protect him. He finds joy in a new hobby and it really helps him through the dark days. I love the way the book is written in that you feel sorry for Ross but you also feel happy for him for being strong and being able to get on with life as best he can. One read that will stick with me for the future.
“Brilliant”
(Paperback)
by Karena Freeman
What a lovely little book this is! Firstly the cover is so bright and appealing it instantly attracts you. It follows a young boy ,Ross, through his diagnosis of cancer and radiotherapy whilst still attending school and showing up for life. Along the way Ross learns a new skill, makes some new and important friendships, and begins to discover what really matters in life. The book is full of illustrations and mini comic strips which are just wonderful and add an extra dimension to the story. Whilst obviously this book covers sad topics and shows the bad bits it also shows the true beauty of friendships, love and laughter. It’s such a beautiful read and I would happily recommend this book to anyone.
“Loved this!”
(Paperback)
by Caroline Tiller
This is a fantastic book, truthful, heartbreaking and uplifting all at the same time. It reminded me very much of Wonder, but it is so much more as well. The main character is instantly likeable, and you really find yourself rooting for him throughout the book. The other characters are nicely rounded and all add an extra dimension to the story. Personally I wasn't a huge fan of the cartoons throughout, but then I'm much older than the YA intended audience, so that's probably to be expected. In the end I just skipped over them, and it didn't affect my enjoyment of the book at all. I think my daughter would thoroughly enjoy this book, and I shall be passing my copy onto her. Thanks to Readers First for my advance copy.
