Reviews: Winter (12)
“Scotch Broth For The Soul”
(Hardback)
by Faye MILLS
A heart warming and nostalgic read that is sure to lift your spirits this winter. I don't normally part with books but as soon as I read this I had to pass it on to a friend who I knew would love it just as much as I did. If you're looking to escape the Christmas chaos this book has got you covered!
“Nostalgic musings and more on a harsh season”
(Hardback)
by Pineknotter
4.5 stars What a nice change of pace book of thought pieces about winter, often rooted in the author's fond memories of her childhood in Fife. The winter celebrations, the family traditions, the hearty food, the wildlife and how things have evolved over the past 50+ years. Quite a range of subjects, all attached to the season, including the author's use of the cold, forbidding days outdoors to marshal her notes and thoughts together for her next work. Every segment interesting. I was especially taken with comparing her childhood experience of stormy winter days with mine in the same years. Scotland is one of my favorite settings and yet, surprisingly, I don't think I'd read a Val McDermid book until this one. Now I know I'll have to remedy that. I was quite taken with her writing style. Thanks to Grove Atlantic/Atlantic Monthly Press and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

“A wintery delight!”

by Anna at Windsor
Val McDermid's seasonal memoir on the importance of winter, the creative journey behind her books, and nostalgia for seasons gone by, was truly a pleasure to read. As one of Scotland's best loved writers, it comes as no surprise that McDermid's writing utterly transports the reader. I was thoroughly charmed by her descriptions of the Caledonian Sleeper traversing a dark and snowy landscape, the crackling Hogmanay celebrations, and the crisp, cold brightness of Fife! Moreover, the historical and folkloric insight which McDermid weaves through each chapter offers a fascinating exploration of the lesser-known facets of the season. With its warmth and wisdom, as well as a series of beautiful linocut illustrations, this is a book to treasure long after the coldest months have passed. Many thanks to Hachette for providing an advance copy.
“Brilliant winter reminiscences”
(Hardback)
by Yvonne Strong
This is a very easy and most rewarding read. In a series of short essays, beloved Scottish crime writer Val McDermid takes a trip down memory lane to relive some of her most heartwarming experiences of winter, from the frosty scenery to local traditions to the succession of winter celebrations (all the way from Halloween to Hogmanay). Scotland is far enough north that winter is a big deal, and this book invites the reader to experience the warmth and the cold of the ending of the old year and the beginning of the new. There are some beautiful illustrations by Philip Harris throughout the book to add to the atmosphere. This book would make an excellent Christmas gift.

“Wonderful!”

by Catriona Anderson
I don’t say this lightly, but Val McDermid’s Winter, may be one of my favourite books. Not just because it’s beautifully written, cosy with lovely humour, but it brought back all those best memories from my childhood. Memories that I had not recalled for some time. Memories of loved ones no longer here. Perfect, just perfect, and a book I will look to seek out every winter.
