“I’ve started, so I’ll finish.”

Let it be known I am reading other books while picking up another Jack Reacher novel. But like a runaway, express train “Without Fail” has raced into the station shortly after “Echo Burning”. I need to come up for air. It is firstly the way Lee Child writes, particularly in these earlier cases, in this addictive series. The unfolding story cannot be simply set aside to pick up later. Secondly, Reacher is an iconic vigilante action hero who rights wrongs with a sense of natural justice. The stories are multilayered mysteries where the normal law enforcement can’t quite manage without the input and investigative nous of ex military MP Jack Reacher. I particularly liked the ideas here around the protection of our leaders and the reference to famous films about political assassinations. The overall objective and whether the perpetrator wants to get away with their life. The close proximity suicide hit or the sniper round from distance in the expectation of getting away. The secret service are front and centre here trying to protect the Vice President from a clear and present threat. The way the disclosed intention to kill Armstrong pans out is both frustrating and an enigma compared to the usual cases. Why are they signposting the intended assassination and sending notes with details of their intended hit? Clearly it is a credible threat. The plot builds tension and an expectation that the life of the target cannot be sustainably protected. Clever audit of the secret service at work with the expectation that there will always be a risk. Especially at it seems they may have some internal help or in service grievances to exploit. I loved the associations with family, relationships and the respect for Reacher’s brother known to many of the participants here.

It is easy to see why the Jack Reacher series is so popular, he is a fantastic anti-hero. Matched with Lee Child’s excellent writing style, makes it an excellent read. There is plenty of pace and drama and with Reacher’s attitude and not caring about what others think of him. Reacher has managed to snag a ride with a couple of musicians heading towards Atlantic City. While they play Reacher makes sure that they do not lose any money to the very questionable tactics of the club manager. Reacher does not know that somebody is looking for Reacher and with his hobo lifestyle he is not easy to find at the best of times. Reacher reached the nearest Western Union to collect his money he observes that there is a two-year-old Chevy Suburban parked outside the place. He could see that it was one of two things, either a government or law enforcement vehicle. The car was parked where it should not be and the UHF antennae on the roof and the tinted windows were also a massive clue. When a woman, M.E. Frolich, steps out of the vehicle and calls him, Reacher cannot place her. She explains to Reacher that she knew Reacher’s dead brother, Joe. She explains that she too is with the Secret Service and that she would like to hire him. She tells him that the target is the vice-president-elect of the USA and he is stunned. When she explains why, Reacher becomes interested. He also cannot help himself when he sees a woman in distress. This is another brilliant Reacher story that is absolutely gripping. The vice-president of the USA would be the second most secure person on the planet. Child delivers a compelling and thrilling story which keeps you hooked throughout. The story is well researched, well written with great pace and drama. A pure pleasure to read.
“What a fantastic read”

Doesn't matter which Reacher novel you read once you start, you don't want to put it down. I am on number 14 in the series and, apart from one, that has been the case. From the first page to the last you just get dragged into the story.
