Reviews: Yasuke (1)
“History you don’t hear enough of”
(Paperback)
Yasuke tells the incredible true history of Japans first, and only, black samurai. Yasuke was strong and intelligent and made success for himself despite the trauma of his abduction from a small village in Africa and the no doubt gruesome sights of being a successful mercenary.
Yasuke also paints a compelling portrait of the Japanese empire under Daimyō Nobunaga and their struggle with the new and barbaric Jesuits, christian missionaries from the foreign west.
Lockley brings us amazing piece of history and manages to mute, if not eliminate, western biases. A truly incredible window into a relatively unknown piece of history in the western world.
